Top Facts - Consumption

Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year.

According to the EPA, over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps are consumed in the U.S. each year.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. (Estimated cost to retailers is $4 billion)

What to do? Purchase reusable bags! Here are some that I found:

Where can these be found?

Whole Food Supermarket

http://www.reusablebags.com/: 5.95 with a discount if you buy 4 or more

http://www.bagsontherun.com/ : about 2.00 a bag but shipping isn't too cheap unfortunately. It is still the one I went with because it still only came out to be 3.00 a bag and they said they will last at least 2 years.

http://www.grassrootsstore.com/: about 6.95, with some other cute products as well.

http://www.sayyestocanvas.com/ : Thru cafepress-about 14.99 a bag (lots to choose from)

you are soooo right about the canvas bags!
When I was in South Africa in 2003, supermarkets there had already decided to charge customers for plastic bags (makes you rethink the concept of an "advanced" society), and I got into the habit then!

Niapele also sells cute canvas tote bags - they are more expensive, but the sales benefit our programs: http://www.cafepress.com/niapele

or through squidoo:http://www.squidoo.com/idealismreloaded
